SUFFERING FROM NECK PAIN?

Flagstaff, AZ Neck Pain

Over the past 12+ years we've had the privilege of helping patients all across Northern Arizona with their neck pain.

Our clinic is different in that we dig, find, and FIX the root cause of the neck pain. We don't simply "mask" the symptom with a medication.

We'll determine the cause which will then determine our course of action. In other words, a herniated / bulging disc will require different treatment than misalignments, referred pain etc.

We also have different methods of reducing / minimizing INFLAMMATION in the body...so we'll look at things from a longevity and regenerative perspective and make recommendations that will reduce inflammation and enhance whole-body balance.

If you're struggling with chronic neck pain and can't get to the bottom of it, then give our clinic a call. Our methods are safe, natural, and highly effective.

OSTEOPATHIC AND REGENERATIVE CARE FOR NECK PAIN

Even though the neck is a relatively small area of the body, it is comprised of some complicated structures which do the important job of holding your head up. The small size of the vertebrae of the neck allows for a lot of mobility but can also make the neck more vulnerable to injury and pain.

Most of these issues are either caused by or impact, the alignment of the spine. When muscles in the neck go into spasm, the spine gets pulled out of alignment. When the spine is misaligned, the nerves become irritated and cause further tension and other systemic problems. Issues that have their source in the neck can have a major impact throughout every other system. Likewise, areas of the body that receive innervation from the neck can cause pain by referral or reflex into the neck.

Many people let spinal problems go uncorrected. They hope that if they wait long enough the pain will simply go away. However, often the lax ligaments and disc problems from injuries, spinal misalignment from injury or bad ergonomics etc predispose patients to worse problems and unchecked spinal degeneration in the future. Over time, that area can become aggravated, and the pain can return. If the problem is not corrected, it can become much more serious. Some patients let things go to the point where surgery may be the only option.

OUR APPROACH IS UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT

Most people try to deal with their neck pain using prescription or over-the-counter drugs. This may help to relieve the symptoms in the short-term, but not only are patients dealing with side effects, the underlying structural and neurologic issue goes unaddressed.

Osteopathy is a natural practice that addresses the structural, circulatory and neurologic cause that leads to the majority neck pain. Following a thorough medical exam and osteopathic assessment aimed at ruling out other issues and finding the exact source of the problem, a personalized recovery plan is developed. This may include regenerative injections or simply osteopathic treatment, or other modalities, depending on the patient. Call our office today to set up a consultation and find a solution that enhances your overall health rather than masking a symptom.

COMMON CAUSES OF NECK PAIN

There can be numerous causes of neck pain. Let's explore some of the most common causes.

Structural Misalignment in the neck or other areas of the body

An osteopathic lesion refers to the mechanical misalignment, impaired autonomic innervation, impaired internal organ function, impaired blood supply/detoxification among others that create tension patterns that affect the entire body's balance and structure. What are some of the reasons WHY subluxations develop? Common causes include poor posture, text neck (too much cell phone use) eating an inflammatory diet, injuries, degenerative diseases, stress, repetitive movements, and a sedentary lifestyle. In our clinic we'll do a thorough examination / analysis to determine WHERE subluxation is and the impact it's having on your health.

Muscle Strain & Ligament Sprain

A neck sprain or strain can happen suddenly OR can develop slowly over time from repetitive movements or bad posture during work and daily activities. Strains occur when a muscle is stretched too far and partially tears, damaging the muscle itself. Sprains happen when over-stretching and tearing affects ligaments, which connect the bones together. For more information on treating overstretched ligaments, please see the regenerative medicine section.

Herniated Disc

The center of a cervical disc is like jelly & can break through the tough outer layer and irritate the nerve root(s). The herniated portion of the disc is full of proteins that cause inflammation when they reach a nerve, and inflammation as well as nerve compression cause excruciating pain. The disc wall is also supplied by nerve fibers, and a tear through the wall can cause severe pain. A herniated disc can compress an exiting spinal nerve root, or it can compress the central spinal canal. Weakness and overstretching of the ligaments that hold the vertebrae together around the disc (from whiplash or other injury) cause too much motion, too much stress on the discs and predispose to worsening disc problems and bone spurs.

Degenerative Disc Disease

As people age over time, discs lose hydration and wear down and spinal ligaments become more loose. As the disc loses hydration / water, it cannot resist forces as well, and without the protection of strong ligaments the disc wall may develop tears and cause pain or weakening that can lead to a herniation. The disc can also collapse and contribute to spinal stenosis of the central canal or neuroforaminal stenosis.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis results from wear and tear of the disc and facet joints. It consists of narrowing joint space, bone spurs and cyst formation in the bones. It causes pain, inflammation, instability, and stenosis to a variable degree. Spinal degenerative osteoarthritis is associated with aging and is slowly progressive. It is also referred to as degenerative joint disease.

Trauma

Fractures or dislocations of the spine can lead to pain. Neck pain that develops after a trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident or a fall, should be medically evaluated immediately.
